Here's what the infrared brands don't put on the box: virtually every major study behind sauna's famous health benefits — lower mortality, heart disease, stroke and dementia risk — was run on traditional Finnish dry saunas, not infrared. When an infrared cabin is marketed with those numbers, it's leaning on research its own technology was never part of. Here's exactly what the science does — and doesn't — show.
Every figure above comes from studies of traditional dry saunas. Infrared has no long-term outcome research that compares — so when it's sold on these benefits, the evidence isn't actually its own.
The landmark sauna studies — over 2,300 people followed for two decades — measured traditional Finnish dry saunas at 80–100°C (176–212°F). Infrared saunas run far cooler (roughly 45–60°C (113–140°F)) and have no comparable long-term outcome data.
So when you read that sauna cuts the risk of death, stroke, and dementia — that evidence belongs to traditional dry heat. The kind of sauna RÖK builds.

Why the heat matters
It works your heart like a workout
The benefits track with how hard the heat makes your body work — and traditional saunas run hot enough to matter.
Cardiovascular load
- Heart rate climbs to 120–150 bpm during a session — a load comparable to moderate-intensity exercise like brisk walking*
- Heat raises skin blood flow and cardiac output and stimulates the nervous system
- Longer sessions (over 19 minutes) were linked to a 52% lower sudden-cardiac-death risk than short ones
Hormonal & cellular response
- Traditional sauna transiently raises growth hormone — roughly 2 to 5×, depending on session length and heat
- Heat triggers heat shock proteins, part of the body's cellular repair and stress-resistance machinery
- Heat's muscle-protecting effects are established in animal studies and are mechanistically plausible in humans*
*Sauna mimics the cardiovascular load of exercise but not its muscle-training effect. Growth-hormone and heat-shock-protein responses are transient; muscle-mass preservation from heat has been shown in animal studies and is not yet proven in humans.

Infrared research — notably Japan's Waon far-infrared therapy — is promising for specific conditions like heart failure and peripheral artery disease, but rests on far smaller, shorter studies with surrogate endpoints (N=20 to 188), not long-term population outcomes. Extending the traditional-sauna longevity findings to infrared is plausible, but it hasn't been shown.
