The landmark sauna studies — over 2,300 people followed for two decades — measured traditional Finnish dry saunas at 80–100°C (176–212°F). Infrared saunas run far cooler (roughly 45–60°C (113–140°F)) and have no comparable long-term outcome data.

Infrared research — notably Japan's Waon far-infrared therapy — is promising for specific conditions like heart failure and peripheral artery disease, but rests on far smaller, shorter studies with surrogate endpoints (N=20 to 188), not long-term population outcomes. Extending the traditional-sauna longevity findings to infrared is plausible, but it hasn't been shown.

Is traditional or infrared sauna better for your health?
The strongest and longest-running evidence — large Finnish cohorts followed for 15 to 25 years, linking regular sauna use to lower mortality, stroke, and dementia risk — comes from traditional Finnish dry saunas (80–100°C / 176–212°F). Infrared has some promising research (mainly Japan's Waon therapy for heart failure and circulation), but those studies are much smaller, shorter, and use surrogate endpoints. As of today, the proven long-term benefits belong to traditional dry heat.
